​The main difference between backlinks and citations is that citations aren't required to have or include a live hyperlink. An online article or listing site that simply mentions your company's name can be considered a citation.
A citation is any mention of your business out on the web, with or without a link.  Where you can go wrong with this is if your citations do not have NAP (Name, Address & Phone number) do not have consistency.
